First Thoughts on the H2 Manga

First Thoughts on the H2 Manga

Between the recent Holo-Dodger collab earlier this month, the Shohei Ohtani news, and the 2024 Paris Olympics, I’ve been getting a little more exposure to sports lately.  I used to have an interest in sports when I was little and played in things like the local little league baseball teams, but as time went on, I started losing interest in sports, especially after getting into anime.  I still don’t care much for sports, but a little here and there is still nice.

I’m not really into sports anime or manga either, but I’ve seen some like Yuri on Ice, Haikyuu, Aoyama-kun, and Grand Blue (that technically counts).  I don’t really actively look to watch them, but H2 is a little different.  H2 is a classic manga as far as I’m aware of and I’ve heard people praising it.  Most importantly though, Hata-sensei owns the H2 manga, so I want to give it a read.  Time stamped link of the video where Hata-sensei shows his H2 manga below.

H2 VOL 1-3 MANGA SPOILERS

As usual though, H2 has been on my plan to read list for years, but now I finally decided to start reading it.  Other than the knowledge that it’s about baseball and the synopsis for it, I went in not knowing anything, but I could still guess it would most likely follow the classic sports drama with having to win in some big tournament.

When I started reading the first few chapter, I was kinda confused.  I understood some stuff, but in general I was kinda lost in who each character was and what the situation was.  By the time I started the 2nd volume though, I had all the characters down and had a good idea of what was happening, so it took me a little to start getting everything organized in my head, which is a little longer than normal.

The baseball game between the soccer team and baseball club a the end of vol 1 and beginning of vol 2 was actually pretty hype.  Seeing Hiro and Noda join the baseball club side and bring a come back was pretty cool.  One of those “pros jump in and smash the noobs” type of thing.  The cocky soccer players getting karma.  Shame that the baseball club ended up losing still 8-7, but what would be the fun in winning right from the start?  Gotta train and show progress by losing them winning later.

The concept of Hiro and Noda not being able to play baseball because of injuries that ended up being fake because of some quack doctor seemed kinda lazy imo.  I feel like there could have been a more interesting way to have them stay away from baseball then come back in.  Yanagi is a good example.  That was a good character story where a kid who loves baseball can’t play due to his dad hating baseball but going against his dad’s wish and chasing after his dream anyway is a good way of doing it.

Well for now I don’t have much more to say other than I’m enjoying this manga.  3 volumes finished 31 to go.  I’m excited to see what comes of this.

Btw, I haven’t watched the new Alya episode yet, but I gotta say, I love so damn much that they did a Chiisana koi no uta cover for the ed.  Like I said in my about me, Mongol800 is one of my favorite bands, and Chiisana koi no uta was my gateway song to them.  I have all the lyrics and chords memorized even though I suck at singing.  Alya-san just isn’t missing with these ed covers, can’t wait to see what comes next.  Bye
