The totally original post idea of just giving a list of your favorite anime from each year lmao, but I’m doing it on this blog since it’s easier to write on this than making a whole video on youtube about it. Well anyway, these are my favorite anime from each year that I’ve seen. In some of the older years there’s a good chance I haven’t seen any anime from that year but might have a notable plan to watch anime, so I might mention some of those too.
**Also potential spoiler warnings**
Guidelines
The only guideline really other than the obvious being part of the that year is that I’m counting anime with multiple seasons like gundam witch from mercury as the year that S1 aired in. But anime that have multiple series within a franchise/universe like fate or gundam 1979 and gundam zeta will be counted as 2 different anime since they have different main characters and stuff.
2024 – Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
I actually haven’t watched that many anime that aired this year, but Alya is definitely number 1 imo. You could also probably guess this would be the case based on my previous Alya posts lmao. For one thing, Yuki is definitely the best girl of the year for me and is based af. Alya, Ayano, and Masha are all amazing characters too. The story was pretty good and the romance was definitely enjoyable. I also loved the covers they did for the EDs, especially them doing some songs like kawaikute gomen, chiisana koi no uta, and hare hare yukai. Definitely love this anime
2023 – Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Before you remind me of tonikawa S2 or vinland saga S2, remember, season 2s get combined with the year their S1 is from, so dw, they’ll see their time later, especially tonikawa. Though I think frieren is equally as amazing. For one thing, to put into perspective how fricking dominants frieren is, it’s been no. 1 on MAL over FMAB for about a year already. That alone speaks volumes, but frieren is a near masterpiece in almost every way. Someday I gotta make a post going over it or something, would be fun if I get the time to do it. But for now, a quick list of some of the things I think was masterfully done in frieren: The music done by Even Call, the story, the characters, the vibes, the symbolisms, the animation, the action, the art style, and the Keiichirou’s directing. I could go one for a long time extending this list, but I want to keep this a little shorter for this post. Also to point out Keiichirou Saitou again, goated director, he also directed Bocchi. I might make a full post (or maybe several) talking about Frieren in the future, but not promises. Also I highly recommend pey talks anime’s videos on youtube for good analyses of frieren.
2022 – Bocchi the Rock
Easily the undisputed winner of 2022 (even if crunchyroll awards doesn’t think so). This is another anime that’s basically a masterpiece and I can definitely make several dedicated posts to it, assuming I have time to do so. Just like Frieren, Bocchi was directed by Keiishirou Saitou, and this was actually the first big anime he directed, and boy did he come out guns blazing. I’ve seen the bocchi anime a total of 4 full times so far and I’ve read vol 1 of the manga twice, but I’ve also revisited episodes and scenes many many times. My 2 favorite things about the bocchi anime is probably the insane amount of symbolisms in the animation, backgrounds, the story, in the characters, in the music, and more. Every time I watch bocchi, I realize more and more symbolisms and stuff, and many other people have pointed out certain things as well that I hadn’t even thought of. The other thing I love is the music. On yt music recap, kessoku band was my 2nd most listened artist after mongol800, and bocchi is actually the reason why I picked electric guitar back up after only playing acoustic for years and I also picked up the bass too. Definitely need dedicated posts to bocchi to talk more, but no promises I’ll get to it lmao.
2021 – The Way of the Househusband
2021 was actually a pretty mid-strength year when it comes to new anime, but there was definitely some really good ones. Gokushufudou is definitely one of my favorite comedies of all time. I’ve seen the anime several times and read the manga multiple times. I also own physical copies of some of the manga. I love this style of comedy and unfortunately it’s a pretty rare style these days, so having a good one like gokushufudou is much appreciated. It’s a pretty family friendly comedy too, my sister and mom love this anime as well! Definitely love this comedy.
2020 – Tonikaku Kawaii
I think this one’s pretty obvious lmao. 10000000% Tonikawa. For one thing, forget 2020, tonikawa is my favorite anime and manga in general. Tonikawa is probably one of the first things that I ever loved to the point where I’m obsessed with it lmao. Tonikawa and hata-sensei other works is my main motivator in life and has guided me towards improving myself and being successful in life. From the moment I first saw a clip of tonikawa on the crunchyroll channel on friday october 16th, 2020, the day episode 3 of s1 aired for America, I instantly fell in love. After school that day I watched the 3 episodes that had aired, then watched them again, and again. Every friday I would immediately go to tonikawa after school and rewatch all the previous episodes, then the new episode. I’ve seen the tonikawa anime and manga both countless times. Idk if I alluded to it yet, but I love tonikawa. And I also love Hata-sensei. Maybe someday I’ll write a post giving a full autobiography about my experiences with tonikawa and Hata-sensei, but again, no promises lmao.
2019 – Vinland Saga
Time for the 2010s now! Vinland Saga is easily one of the best anime of modern times. S1 was amazing, but where I think it really explodes into a masterpiece is in S2. Ofc like I said, even though S2 is the best part of it currently, it still counts towards 2019 since that’s when S1 aired, but that’s just as well bc that means Frieren and Vinland Saga can be on the list! Anyway, Yukimura-sensei is undoubtedly a genius. The way he conveyed the horrors of what war and killing can lead to was done beautifully, it shows a very clear antiwar message. One criticism some people might have is that S1 did it’s job too well by making the violent part too epic, but I think it was still done really well, bc violence and war like that is commonly glorified throughout history, and it showed the general mentality people would have towards that, especially when it comes to the powerful Vikings. But S2 really showed how that violence leads to slavery, death, family separation, political chaos, ect ect. I wrote paragraphs about each episode of S2 after they aired back when S2 was airing on discord, and at some point I might want to write a long post going over the genius of Yukimura-sensei’s Vinland Saga, but yet again, no promises lmao. Also I recommend watching Gigguk’s interview of Yukimura-sensei.
2018 – Violet Evergarden
2018 is an absolutely stacked year, Emiya-gohan, Island, I want to eat your Pancreas, Takagi-san, Asobi Asobase, Grand blue, cells at work, Yuru camp, so many good anime. But ofc none of these can easily beat one of Kyoto Animation’s best works, Violet Evergarden. I think most people can agree Violet Evergarden is an insanely beautiful anime is many aspects. It’s considered to be one of the anime with the best/most beautiful animation and I don’t believe anyone really disagrees with that. The story of Violet Evergarden and her search to find the meaning of “I love you” is really such a sad yet beautiful story. Most people that I know have cried or at least shed a tear while watching Violet Evergarden. For me personally, it holds the record for the piece of media that made me shed the most tears. Episode 10 is famously the biggest tearjerker and man, it really is such an emotional episode. The movie that aired a few years ago is also a massive tearjerker since it continues off Ep 10 and the ending of the movie is so damn emotional. But yeah, this is definitely an extremely beloved anime and deserves to be number 1 in 2018.
2017 – Tsurezure Children
Easily one of the best romance anime outside Tonikawa. Tsurezure Children takes a different approach to romance from most other romances by showing a variety of different types of couples rather than focusing one just 1. This seems like it would be a chaotic idea, but they pulled it off really well. All the couples are diabetically wholesome and cute together and will make your face sore from smiling. There really isn’t that many anime out there that’s more wholesome than Tsurezure Children is.
2016 – Kimi no Na wa
This is another pretty stacked year. In addition to kimi no na wa, we had a silent voice, Saiki K (one of the best comedies ever), sakamoto desu ga (one of the best comedies ever too), tanaka-kun, yuri on ice, and ofc one of the best summers of our generation lmao. But yeah, I think I’ll have to go with Shinkai’s most famous work, Kimi no Na wa for 2016. Easily one of, if not is my favorite movie ever. My first experiences with kimi no na wa is actually a bunch of core memories for me. I remember the day I first learned about kimi no na wa was the day Fonzi M uploaded his zen zen zense in public video. I remember thinking that this is a pretty good song and that I should watch the movie. A few weeks later in September of 2020, I went to watch kimi no na wa immediately after school and that was such an insane experience for me that I immediately thought about erasing my memory to watch it again for the first time, and that was before I even saw other people saying the same thing online lmao. Later that day after dinner I also watched tenki no ko. Zen zen zense was actually the first anime song I ever learned how to play on piano too starting my anipiano journey. I’ve also had kimi no na wa wallpapers ever since then too since it’s full of such beautiful art (currently my google wallpaper). But yeah, this is such a good movie in terms of story, music, visuals, ect. One of the greatest movies of all time.
2015 – Prison School
There’s a lot of good anime in 2015 like GATE, ore monogatari, Shimoneta, momokuri, one punch man, Chivalry of a Failed Knight (when S2?), saekano, and pokemon XY&Z (my favorite pokemon season along side XY but I’m treating XY&Z as a season 2 to that since it basically is), but I gotta go with Prison School. Prison school is a hilarious comedy and super ecchi too, but if you can just view that as part of the comedy it just makes it even funnier. I laughed my head off so much watching this. There’s really strong homie energy among the main boys that makes them really entertaining to watch. Has some really good VAs in it too like Shizuka Itou, Hanazawa Kana, and Kamiya Hiroshi.
2014 – Your Lie in April
This is another tough banger year having Fate/stay night UBW, Amagi brilliant park, and gochiusa. I gotta go with ylia though for one major reason though: ylia showed me the beauty of classical music. Like every good asian kid, my parents forced me to learn piano when I was younger and I hated it, and I also hated classical music too bc I thought it was boring like all your average pop listeners, but eventually anime music made me start liking piano since playing anisongs on it gave me a deeper connection to the music. I never played chopin really when I was younger, so ylia was the first thing to really showcase chopin’s works to me, and man, I love chopin so much. He’s easily my favorite piano composer and I love all his music. Ylia brought me the joy of listening to and playing classical/romantic era music. I’m really grateful for that, and chopin’s ballade no. 1 is one of my all time favorite pieces and I’ve listened to it countless times from countless different performers. Plus ylia has a pretty decent story. Also Tomoki Sakata’s playing in ylia is incredible, especially the ballade performance.
2013 – Pokemon XY
As I previously mentioned, pokemon XY and XY&Z are easily my favorite pokemon seasons. Pokemon was my favorite childhood show and I’ve watched every season up to part of journeys, but XY and XY&Z was peak. For one thing, fricking ash greninja, like tell me that isn’t on the coolest pokemon ever. Ash is the only person in the universe to have a greninja that can mega evolve, like that alone says a lot about greninja. Greninja is one of, if not is ash’s strongest pokemon ever. Really ash should have won the pokemon championship in XY&Z, it was so stupid he didn’t and that’s the main problem I have with this season alongside ash releasing greninja. Aside from that, the art style of XY and XY&Z was my favorite alongside the original, the companions were pretty decent, ash was actually more mature this season, ash’s pokemon team in general was super strong, the music was really good, and also the best pokemon romance imo. I have so many core memories of pokemon XY and XY&Z, also of the X and Y games. I got pokemon Y on my red 3ds XL and my sister got pokemon X on her blue 3ds XL, so many memories with it. I really love this pokemon season.
2012 – Daily Lives of High School Boys
This is another one of my favorite comedies. This has actually had influence over other comedies too, like in sakamoto where the 3 boys are passing the ball around, that’s a reference to a similar scene in daily lives of hs boys. I remember when I first watched it, one of the first scenes in the first ep was a reference to gundam 79 of the zakus landing, it even had some of the same camera angles and everything. Seeing that references I immediately knew I was gonna love this one. Studio sunrise also made this, so there’s a lot of experience and budget behind animating this. This anime is absolutely filled with S tier comedy in every single episode and scene, nonstop laughter. Also the “Danshi koukousei no nichijou YOW” always pops into my head when I think of this anime lmao, it’s so catchy.
2011 – Fate/zero
Not only is this my favorite anime of 2011, it’s my favorite anime out of the main 3 fate anime. For one thing, the fate franchise in general has amazing animation, minus the studio deen one, and ufotable was really pushing out insane quality animation that looks like it’s from 2021 rather than 2011. I also really love the story of fate/zero and the challenges Kiritsugu faces. I really loved the servants too, Iskandar (alexander the great) was such a charismatic dude and such a badass. His confidence when pulling up to saber’s place and forcing a chat between kings was insane to watch. Even though he wasn’t the servant of the MC, I was kinda rooting for him. His special skill where he summons a massive army was also so cool. Also the music in fate/zero is amazing, though that goes for the fate franchise in general. The ending of fate/zero was incredible too, I wasn’t really expecting that to happen, but man, it was as cool as it was devastating to watch.
2010 – Angel Beats
I actually don’t really have that much for 2010, but angel beats is definitely a good one. There’s a lot of mixed feelings about angel beats because it was paced really bad and super rushed at the end, but the reason why is bc the episode number got cut in half so they had no choice but to rush through the plot to get to the end. If it wasn’t for that episode cut I believe we would have had an anime that would be insanely beautiful and healing as we would get to see characters fulfill their regrets like Iwasawa and Yui did. I’m sure we would have had an anime that might shed as many or maybe even more tears from it’s viewers than violet evergarden did. Ik watching Iwasawa’s story and watching her disappear after performing brought me tears, and same with yui fulfilling her wishes that she never got to do bc of her illness when she was alive. Also the music is incredible, the OP and ED are both amazing, also all the songs by Girls Dead Monster are really good. Listening to songs like My song and Ichiban no takaramono never fail to make my eyes water. Ichiban no takaramono was also the first animenz arrangement I ever learned how to play, I really love that song.
2009 – Hetalia Axis Powers
Onto the 2000s! I really enjoy learning about history and am somewhat of an amateur history buff, so an anime like hetalia is really enjoyable. This was actually one of the anime I watched before I became a weeb. My sister showed it to me when I was little and I gotta say, she had pretty good taste with this one. Hetalia has such good comedy, a lot of which is actually based in real history, but the anime style just makes it more funny since the countries are given these personified personalities. Also I just gotta say that as a half taiwanese man myself, taiwan is best girl in this anime! She is legit so cute though lmao, too bad she didn’t get more screen time in the anime.
2008 – Clannad After Story
Ok, I’m just gonna bend the rule a little here bc the only non-sequal anime I have for 2008 is soul eater and toradora which aren’t terrible, but I can’t do clannad for 2007 bc that’ll be something else, and Clannad After story is so insanely good that I have to talk about it. Clannad after story is such a precious story about family relationships and it definitely teachers good lessons on things to keep in mind if you ever have to raise kids. It also really shows a realistic portrayal of someone who would have a much harder time raising kids than most with Tomoya since he was raised motherless and now he has to raise his own kid without a wife by his side too. The struggles he went through was extremely depressing, but when he finally learned about the hardships his own father had to go through and realized he had to step up and try his best to raise Ushio himself is such a precious moment. The scene of Tomoya and Ushio in the flower field is such a damn tear jerker, and there’s such powerful quotes from this anime. This really is such a beautiful and emotional anime.
2007 – Hayate no Gotoku
Some good anime this year like nodame cantabile, clannad, and 5cm/sec, but hayate has to be no. 1 for me as you might have already expected. Hata-sensei’s works are never less than no. 1 for me. Hayate no gotoku is where hinagiku, my waifu, comes from. And yeah, you can’t prob already guess how much I love hayate no gotoku based on my other posts and if you’ve seen me on bluesky or discord or something lmao.
2006 – Code Geass
For now it’s code geass, but I have a feeling that once I watch haruhi suzumiya, that’s gonna end up being my no. 1 for 2006. But anyway, code geass really has such a good story and imo, its ending was incredibly well done. Lelouch was very much a villain despite being the main character, and that’s something I wish we saw more. Death note, which also aired in 2006, did that too with light. I feel like authors are just too scared to have their main character not be the hero for some reason. Having the main character be the villain and spoilers, die in the end is an extremely interesting concept. So yeah, code geass story is really good and it has an amazing ending.
2005 – Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew
Ik this is part of pokemon advance gen which is 2002, but this is the only anime I’ve seen from 2005 so guess it’ll have to do. I am planning on watching Air, ARIA, mushishi, and some other anime from 2005 at some point though. This pokemon movie was pretty decent, but imo more in the middle of the pack. It’s not really one of my top pokemon movies, but I didn’t dislike it either, solid 7/10 lmao.
2004 – One Piece: The Curse of the Sacred Sword
Ik this also is part of one piece which is 1999, but the only anime I’ve seen from 2004 is this and Pokemon: Destiny Deoxys which is also a movie part of advanced gen. I am planning on watching some other 2004 anime like area 88, elfen lied, and howl’s moving castle at some point. Similar to the previous pokemon movie, this one piece movie is kind of in the middle of the pack. Not one of my favorite one piece movies, but pretty decent.
2003 – Fullmetal Alchemist
Ok, so ik this is a hot take, but I liked the original FMA better than FMAB. I thought the concept of alchemy not actually being equal exchange, but instead being fueled by the deaths of people on the other side of the gate to be extremely interesting. It literally opened a whole new world of lore that could be explored. In FMAB though, they just went down the boring everyone lived happily ever after ending. They forced a good ending where Ed tall and all that. That’s another thing too, Ed getting taller at the end of FMAB completely killed the gag for me. Ed being short was supposed to be a gag and be funny but FMAB decided they wanted to connect it to some deeper lore of Ed giving Al’s body nutrients and stuff, that was so stupid. It was a gag and should have stayed as a gag, there was no reason to kill the joke. But yeah, I definitely prefer FMA over FMAB.
2002 – Hoshi no Koe
One of Shinkai’s older films, and an extremely underrated work of art imo. Hoshi no Koe was only a 25 minute short film, but it was beautifully done. I view this as the opposite of 5cm/sec because 5cm/sec is about people changing over time and having to move on from your past. Someone who you might have mutually loved when you were younger might not like you anymore years later, and you’ll have to accept that and move on. Hoshi no Koe though is the opposite. In Hoshi no Koe, the main couple maintains an unbreakable bond where even though Mikako had to venture out into the space and be separated light years away from Noboru, they never stop communicating. As Mikako gets further from Earth, messages take hours to transmit, then days, weeks, months, years, decades. Even when Mikako is so far from Earther that it takes messages decades to travel back to and from Noboru, they never stopped communicating. They never forgot about each other. I couldn’t imaging having to wait a decade just for 1 text message from the person I love to arrive. That just shows the insanely strong bond they had, and man, that hits hard to think about. Also this film takes place in 2046 and we’re about half way there from 2002 yet not nearly as technologically advanced lmao.
2001 – Pokemon 4Ever
Again, this year I’ve only seen this movie and One Piece: Clockwork Island Adventure, so gonna have to do a movie even though this isn’t the year of the parent anime. This actually is one of the pokemon movies higher on my list though. I’ve seen the Celebi movie a good number times when I was a kid, really enjoyed it. I think this movie has a pretty good story and Celebi is definitely one of the cuter looking pokemon out of the mythicals and legendaries. Also I do plan on watching Hellsing and Spirited away at some point which both aired in 2001.
2000 – Pokémon 3: The Movie
Yet again, the only anime I’ve seen in 2000 is this pokemon movie and the 1st One piece movie. Both are pretty decent, but I like the Entei movie a little more. This was one of the first pokemon movies I saw as a kid (which makes sense since it’s the 3rd movie). I remember I was really young back when I first watched it, couldn’t have been older than preschool or something. I remember back then my older sister was showing me a few of the pokemon movies and we went in order from the first one. This was back during the time when you would go onto youtube and watch a distorted pirated version with either distorted audio, the image being bigger than the screen, or the movie being in a little box in the corner of the screen lmao. That was how I first watched a lot of older pokemon anime as a kid lmao, good times. This is a pretty decent movie from what I remember, but haven’t seen it in a long time. It does get nostalgia points though lmao.
1999 – One Piece
Alright, onto the 90s, last century. This year is pretty obvious, can’t be anything other than one piece lmao. I’m not generally an action shounen fan anymore, but I still love one piece so much. I remember when I first watched it, I actually managed to catch up to the anime in 4 months during covid. I peaked at watching 30 episodes in one day some days lmao. Literally 10 hours of straight watching, idk if I’d even be able to watch of one piece if it wasn’t for covid. Not only did I catch up to the anime in 4 months, which was around ep 970ish, I actually managed to rewatch all of it too lmao. I also caught up to the manga in 3 months after catching up to the anime, then I read the manga again as well lmao. One piece really is one of the greatest anime of all time. At some point maybe I’ll write some posts breaking down some of the arcs I really like, but no promises lmao.
1998 – Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop really is a near masterpiece. The story, the animation, the voice acting, the dub voice acting being good even, so many aspects of this anime is just so good. Also the unusual OP, tank, having basically no lyrics was a crazy thing to do, but it turned out really good. Also the ending is famously incredible, and I’d have to agree. Also I really love the space opera genre, though in this case it’d be more of space jazz lmao.
1997 – Pokemon
Do I even need to say anything else about this other than pokemon lmao. Pokemon raised basically every millennial, zoomer, and early gen alpha kid. The newer gen alpha kids still prob like pokemon, but it’s a completely different pokemon than what we know. The newer games are just so different from the older ones and the new pokemon anime not having ash just completely breaks my brain. Pokemon without ash just feels like an ocean without water. But yeah, I fricking love pokemon, I’ve seen indigo league like 13 or 14 full times over the years and have gone back to rewatch episodes many times. I basically have indigo league committed to memory lmao. Also playing the pokemon games was such an adventure as a kid. Pokemon really is one of those anime/games that almost everyone in our generation can related to and definitely has gone down in history as one of the most influential and one of the best shows and games in history.
1996 – Detective Conan
I didn’t watch this as a kid, but I did start watching it a few years ago, watched 140 episodes, then put it on pause lmao. I really need to watch more of it at some point. I’m not really into detective stuff that much, but conan is legit so good, I really enjoyed watching it. Very entertaining show and being able to come up with so many crimes to solve is honestly so impressive, idk how they do it. Also this is the only anime I’ve seen from this year currently lmao.
1995 – Memories
Specifically memories ep 1, Magnetic Rose. This year had some good anime, memories, golden boy, eva, and H2, though memories, magnetic rose is no. 1. Magnetic Rose is an absolutely masterpiece. It’s not a near masterpiece, it is a masterpiece, and an extremely underrated one at that. I try to recommend it to as many people as I can because it need to be known more. Every person that I know that has watched it all agrees that magnetic rose is amazing. I do plan on making a post at some point that’ll basically be an essay breaking down magnetic rose, but who knows when that’ll be released bc finding time to write such an in-depth analysis takes is really hard lmao. But yeah, magnetic rose is really such a masterpiece in every way, and I highly highly highly recommend watching it. Also the 2 other short films in memories are pretty good. Stinky bomb was really funny and cannon fodder has pretty in-depth symbolism in it too with its dystopian military society. Ootomo Katsuhiro really did such an incredible job with this.
1994 – N/A
We finally arrive at the first year where I haven’t watched any anime from it yet, though I do plan on watching Aozora Shoujotai which aired in 1994.
1993 – N/A
Damn, 2 years in a row with nothing, though I plan on watching The Cockpit which aired this year.
1992 – Sailor Moon
Here we go, I’ve seen an anime this year. Sailor moon was actually the anime that turned me into a weeb lmao. A friend and I had at the time would jokingly sing the sailor moon OP funny girls show, but then it occurred to me I don’t actually know what sailor moon is other than that it’s a girl’s show, so I watched it half as a joke and half because I was curious. And man, they really sucked me into the story. I really enjoyed sailor moon so much, I thought it would just be some funny girly girl show, but it legit was such a good romance with a really well written story. I also later found out that a lot of guys do actually agree sailor moon is really good despite it seeming like a girls show. Sailor moon R, S, crystal, and all that is meh though. Those ones are just enemy of the week things with the same formula of enemy appears, something happens that prevents sailor moon from getting to the battle, the other sailor scouts fight the enemy, sailor moon eventually arrives late, then finishes off the enemy. Same repeating formula, but the original sailor moon had a really well written story and romance between Usagi and Tuxedo mask.
1991-1989 – N/A
Haven’t seen anything from 89-91 and no plannings currently.
1988 – N/A
Haven’t seen anything, but planning on watching Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, Mobile Police Patlabor.
1987 – N/A
Planning on watching city hunter.
1986 – N/A
Planning on watching double zeta gundam, which I actually want to start some time this month or next month maybe. Also planning on watching Maison Ikkoku, Project A-Ko, and Castle in the Sky.
1985 – Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Here we go, finally got a year where I watched an anime since 92. Zeta gundam is generally pretty highly praised, and gotta say, I really enjoyed it and it’s definitely worth the praise. Really interesting story where the corrupt government is abusing its power an the terrorists fighting against them are actually the morally right people while the government is committing genocides and stuff. There’s a lot of really cool gundams in this anime like the zeta gundam, the hyaku shiki, and the psycho gundam. Also really good music.
1984 – N/A
Planning on watching Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
1983 – N/A
Planning on watching Hadashi no Gen
1982 – Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space
Technically the same thing as the 1979 gundam, but I’ll include it since I have watched the gundam 79 movies and have nothing else for this year. The movies do cut out a lot of content so I do recommend watching the 1979 anime instead. I’ll talk more about gundam 79 when I get to 1979.
1981 – Mobile Suit Gundam I and Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow
I’m putting both movies since they got together and all that. Same thing as the 3rd movie. Will talk about gundam 79 in 1979.
1980 – N/A
Planning on watching Space Runaway Ideon.
1979 – Mobile Suit Gundam
Alright, here we go. The father of the mecha era that would will last for the next 2-3 decades and the start of one of the biggest media franchises in the world. I’m gonna keep this pretty concise since I can talk about this for hours and probably should give it some of its own posts. To start, I just have to say that gundam 79 is an absolute masterpiece when it comes to the message of antiwar. I won’t go into detail here bc I’ll end up talking for too long, but gundam 79 beautifully portrays many of the downsides of war like forcing civilians to move and get tangled up in violence that they had no say in, someone trying to get revenge for a loved one that was killed but ends up becoming the villain in the eyes of innocent people on the enemy side after they killed someone that’s beloved to someone else. There may be a protagonist in gundam 79, but there is no good guy or bad guy. Both sides have both amazing people and both sides have committed horrendous crimes. Another thing is that fact that gundam 79 actually has a lot of roots in real history and follows the concept of history repeating itself as it always does when people don’t listen to the past and think they can do better. Alright, I’ll stop myself from going on for too long, but also the music is amazing, the characters are amazing, the story is basically a masterpiece, and this is probably my favorite gundam. I can also go on about how Gundam vs Hello Kitty actually contributes to the main story of gundam and legit fits in really well, but that’s for another post.

1970 – New York Trip
Surprisingly I watched something from 1970. This was a short 5 minute film by Furukawa Taku, you can watch it here. I guess you could call it interesting, but definitely weird af. Some really trippy animation going on here and I do kinda question what Furukawa Taku was on when he made this lmao. I’ve been to NYC many many times over my life but never in 1970, so who knows, maybe it was some weird abstract trippy looking place back then lmao. But yeah, I don’t even know if you can count this as anime, it is a Japanese animation and is on anilist and MAL, but who knows. Not my favorite anime or whatever, but since it’s the only one I’ve seen in 1970, it gets the award of first place for this year. Also super weird thumbnail for the anime lmao.
1969 – N/A
Nothing atm, but we did get the Apollo 11 moon landing this year!
1968-65 – N/A
Nothing for these years
1964 – N/A
Haven’t seen anything from this year, but I would like to watch 0-sen Hayato. The problem is though that most of 0-sen Hayato is actually lost media and can’t be watched anywhere. If someone somehow manages to find all the episodes for this, please lmk.
1963 – N/A
Planning on watching astro boy at some point.
1962-the end of time
Nothing atm.
End section thingy
Alright, that’s my favorite anime from every year, and in the later years some of the anime I plan on watching. This took way too long to make since I ended up writing more than planned lmao. It was really fun though reminiscing through all the anime I’ve watched over the years. Maybe I’ll make a post with my 2nd favorites from each year since there’s a lot of good ones that couldn’t make the cut since there was a better anime that year. Anyway, thanks for reading this, and if you actually read the entire thing, you’re crazy bc this post is almost 6,200 words lmao. Still working on the hina frames, and yeah, bye
ps. Try to ignore any mistypes and stuff bc I’m not proof reading through 6,200 words, not right now at least.
